Avoid Sciatica Surgery With Chiropractic

Dr. Dalton works with countless sciatica patients here in our Rochester Hills office, and many of these men and women were afraid that they might need surgery to eliminate their pain. The latest research indicates that a large number of people don't require surgery for this widespread issue, and that chiropractic is more effective at resolving sciatic nerve pain.

A common surgery for sciatica is microdiscectomy, and in a 2010 study, specialists examined 80 women and men with sciatica who were referred for this procedure.

Forty patients were then randomly sorted into one of two groups. The first group received surgical microdiscectomy and the second group received chiropractic care.

Both groups got better; however, no noticeable difference in results was reported one year post-treatment between the surgery group and the chiropractic group. Additionally, about 60% of the participating patients who could not find relief from any other treatment approach "benefited from spinal manipulation to the same degree as if they underwent surgical intervention."

Simply put, chiropractic provided the same positive advantages as surgery without needing to undergo the higher amounts of surgery-based pain or suffer through drawn-out recovery times often affiliated with that specific treatment option. Additionally, you also don't run the risks affiliated with surgical microdiscectomy, such as nerve root damage, bowel or bladder incontinence, bleeding, or infection.

Surgery ought to be the last option for sciatica pain. If you live in Rochester Hills and you're experiencing back pain or sciatica, give Dr. Dalton a call today at (248) 977-7039. We'll help determine the origin of your pain and work hard to get you relief.

Chiropractors, often considered alternative or complementary medicine practitioners, are primary care doctors who focus on good health through proper nutrition, exercise, and other lifestyle factors. The chiropractic philosophy is based on the idea that when nerves emerging from the spinal cord are compromised (known as a subluxation), the affected individual might experience pain, disability and an overall decrease in the quality of life.
